Does the Bible Condone Slavery?
1 Timothy 6:1–2 does not condone slavery, but gives instructions to Christian slaves on how to live faithfully in their situation.
Descriptive vs. Prescriptive:
The Bible often describes cultural realities (like slavery) without prescribing them as God’s ideal.
The New Testament lays the groundwork for the eventual dismantling of slavery, especially in verses like:
Galatians 3:28 – “There is neither slave nor free... you are all one in Christ Jesus.”
Philemon 1:16 – Paul appeals for Onesimus to be received “no longer as a slave, but better than a slave, as a dear brother.”
1 Corinthians 7:21 – Paul encourages slaves to gain their freedom if possible.
